Issues & Views

As, Mahatma Gandhi said “Cleanliness is next to godliness. We can no more gain God’s blessing with an unclean body than with an unclean mind. A clean body cannot reside in an unclean city”.

The core meaning behind this saying is “cleanliness is everything for the goodness ”. People should keep themselves clean and bright to maintain their healthy lifestyle and healthy living by all ways and always. Cleanliness is way to godliness and godliness is way to balance mind, soul and body. Being clean is the mean to keep ourselves physically and mentally clean. Clean habit sense creates good impression and reputation which reflects a clean character of an individual.

India ranks sixth in terms of carbon emission in the world. India is a rapidly developing nation that will be able to cut down its emissions very sharply in the medium term. With a growing population and a rising consumption-driven middle class, the country's electricity demand will double by 2020.

India still has to build 99 percent of its infrastructure, which affords plenty of opportunities to go green. By 2015, about 20 percent of India's energy is estimated to come from renewable resources. Reforms have to take place in all three segments of the power sector: generation, transmission and distribution.

By 2050, India's population will increase by about 500 million. They can have a better way of life if India implements smart urbanisation policies, especially in zoning, transit and housing. Building good public transport systems and encouraging carbon-free modes of movement such as walking and cycling and building offices near people's homes are some ways of doing that, experts at the session said. For instance, new cities can have buildings near train or bus stations, as well as taller buildings to change the carbon footprint impact.

India needs to generate 8-10 million jobs annually. Companies could focus on semi-urban and rural areas to slow down the pace of urbanisation, while helping rural youth. High-speed broadband or telecom services can offer health, education and other facilities to people as well, which could create its own set of jobs.

The government needs to encourage public-private partnerships more aggressively. Yet, that is still not happening. Indeed, in early October, the government arranged for a two-day conference on how to become a green nation. Not a single business speaker was invited. The government also needs to facilitate more investments for promoting education and skills in clean technology and power generation in India.

Environmental Issues of India

While India has gone through a rapid period of economic growth in recent years, critics say that growth has come at a severe cost to the country’s environment in the form of deforestation, pollution and threats to endangered species.

A high standard of living in India has increased the demand for lumber and this has led to significant deforestation within the country. According to the World Wildlife Fund, overall industrial roundwood usage in India could surpass 70 million square meters annually by 2020. Domestic supply would fall short of this number by approximately 14 million square meters.

As the nation must count heavily on imports to meet this growing need, there is anxiety that this could cause loss of forests with high conservation values and significantly lower biodiversity. The problem is only made worse by the fact that some of the world’s most iconic and endangered species live in India.

India is also known for having some of the world’s worst pollution. A 2013 report from India’s Central Pollution Control Board found that more than 2,700 million liters per day of domestic sewage is discharged by cities located along the Ganges River.

“Cities have grown without planning and investment, so most do not have underground drainage networks,” the report said. “Waste is generated but not conveyed to treatment plants. There is no power to run treatment plants; bankrupt municipalities and water utilities have no money to pay for operations.”
